John Derbyshire: An Arctic Alliance?

The determinants of geopolitics over the next few decades will be:

* The degree of intra-Arctic solidarity, our nations united in a common concern about demographic collapse, and in common anxieties about threats from Temperates.
* The degree to which Europe, the U.S.A., and the old British dominions (Canada, Australia, New Zealand) can maintain their identity as Arctics while their populations of immigrant Temperates and Tropicals swell.
* The ability of Arctic nations to maintain their edge over Temperates and Tropicals in intelligence and creativity. (Lynn and Vanhanen's comprehensive studies suggest a gross mean IQ of over 100 for the Arctics, about 90 for the Temperates, less than 80 for the Tropicals.)

Perhaps it is time that we Arctics resolved to sink our minor differences and address our common problems, beginning with those demographic ones.

John Derbyshire: Speaking the Unspeakable

The flap over geneticist Jim Watson’s remarks about race differences in I.Q. has generated some interesting mainstream comment. Some highly respectable outlets — the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Slate.com — have stepped away from the traditional “Shocked! Scandalized!” template to actually look at the science and say interesting things about it.

This dawning realism is all very cautious and qualified, of course, but at least mainstream science editors are no longer jumping up on chairs, shrieking and clutching their skirts. Thoughtful commentary is showing up. Good grief!

JihadWatch: Honour Killing in Dallas

People have been sending me this story all day, and I thank you all for doing so, but I haven't put it up until now because I do not, contrary to the allegations of some, post here every crime committed by a Muslim, or attribute crimes committed by Muslims to the jihad ideology without evidence that there is a connection. A murder is a terrible thing, but all kinds of people commit murders, and they do so for all sorts of reasons.

However, this story from WFAA.com (thanks to Stacy McCain at the Washington Times) contains a detail that suggests it was an honor killing: "Police say they are looking into the possibility that the father was upset with his daughters dating activities."

Lawrence Auster: Two Phrases in Need of Elimination

Is there not something deeply wrong with a culture in which, when mass murder occurs, political leaders and pundits immediately describe it as a "reminder"--as though the most important thing about a monstrous crime is not that it's a monstrous crime, but that it leads us to a thought process about some other issue? This is the abstract and unreal mind-set of liberalism, which, as we can see, has taken root in India as well as in the West.

Another word that ought to be dropped in these circumstances is "cowardly." Obviously, there is nothing cowardly about a Muslim being willing to die in the act of killing his enemies, which according to the Koran is the holiest act a Muslim can perform. The recourse to the word "cowardly" is another symptom of liberalism. Liberal politicians don't want to call the perpetrators of these crimes "enemies" or "evil," since liberalism prohibits the recognition of the existence of enemies and evil. So they call them "cowardly," which makes the speaker sound tough and determined, when in fact he is only being absurd.

One of the most characteristic things about liberalism is the moral poverty it inflicts on those who follow it.

Calling a terrorist act a "reminder" is similar to saying that people are "shocked" by its occurrence--liberals, as I've often noted, are constantly being "shocked" by a reality they refuse to recognize. Both phrases suggest that people don't really believe that terrorism exists, so they require the "reminder" to "shock" them back into the realization that it does. The subtext is: this event forces us once again (for the nth time) to think about this problem that we don't want to think about, or rather it forces us to declare how important it is for us to think about this problem that we don't want to think about.

By contrast, a society that actually recognized and was facing the reality of jihadism and terrorism would not speak of a terrorist act as a reminder, because it would already be involved in opposing the jihadists and making war against them. Do you think that when the Japanese sank a U.S. destroyer in the Pacific in 1943, American leaders and journalists said that this was a "reminder" of the fact that we were in a war?

Inverted World: The Improvident Races

As we saw in The Reality of Racial Differences, there are large, and almost certainly innate, differences between whites and blacks in intelligence and ability to defer gratification. Hispanics, America’s largest minority group, are much more similar to blacks than whites in these traits. Consequently, with the increasing size of the Hispanic population, America has every reason to expect higher rates of social failure that are the inevitable consequence of low intelligence and low ability to defer gratification.

“Ability to defer gratification” is a bit of a mouthful. Social scientists use the more compact term “time preferences” to designate this attribute. People with little ability to defer gratification have high time preferences; those with more have lower time preferences. An even more compact, but less scientific term, is “provident,” which means “having or showing foresight; providing carefully for the future.” Since blacks and Hispanics are less likely to do these things than whites, we can refer to them as improvident races.
